Are you using your imagination?

A child creates new realities through the art of play.

While spending long hours in her imagination, she invents never-before-heard-of scenarios, making up fantastic characters and universes as she goes. If a child is given toys that allow him to make it up as he goes along, so much the better. Whole worlds have been constructed with the sticks, stones, and mud found in the backyard.

A neighbor’s garden becomes a fairyland, and a scary tree is haunted. Children don’t need a lot of stuff to create, just some unscheduled time, space, and their imaginations will do.

That’s how your life works too, you make it up as you go along.

How boring it would be to have it all neatly laid out for you, in advance. If you have no need for your creativity, no problems to solve for yourself, and no way to get validated by growing stronger and more capable, you won’t get to find out who you are and what you’re capable of doing. Especially when you try to plan it all out in advance and to control every outcome and eventuality, life itself has a way of upsetting your perfect plans. At some point, you’re going to have to improvise.

In the most interesting stories you read, the hero has to overcome something seemingly insurmountable, to solve big problems, and to learn something about himself, in order to prevail. You can cheer him on as he grows and moves past whatever held him back. The story is always more fun and fulfilling this way. We read these stories and watch these movies to help inspire ourselves to do the same.

Old rules and limitations don't stand a chance when imagination is at work.

If you can imagine changing an old set of circumstances, you can do the work required to create a new reality. If you have your life all laid out in front of you and handed to you on a silver platter, you are going to be Bored with a capital B. There is nothing more tedious and dull than trying to live a pre-fab life. If you are trying to control everything, or won’t make a move, take a chance, or try something new unless you have a guarantee that you’ll succeed, you’ll hold yourself back time and time again.

This is one reason we are each experiencing so much destruction now. For generations we have bought the lie that we could be safe by trying to control every detail of life. ‘Experts’ have stood in for our own intuition, as we gave up space to their information and statistics. Profits and politics still rule over common sense and compassion. We may have consulted our bodies last of all, another reason why we’re seeing such a high level of degenerative disease in the 21st century.

Your imagination is your spirit at work.

Bored children create trouble for a reason. They are not getting validated for their abilities. Bored adults often create drama and problems too, for the same reason. When you are bored, your spirit checks out. Where did you go? It’s time to go deeper as human beings, to live more completely. It can actually become less complicated, not more. Boredom and busyness complicate matters. Bored people make big messes.

Imagination can be messy too, and I mean that in a good way. If you imagine how you want to be, or what you want to have in your life, it can be a bit messy getting there. You may have a few things to set aside as you move towards your true goals. It’s time to use your imagination in a big way, and create your life to be what you want it to be.

"We all start out knowing magic. We are born with whirlwinds, forest fires, and comets inside us."  ~Robert McCammon
