Artist's Statement
My work is about spirit, energy, beauty, and healing. Emotion plays a major role, beauty is my passion. Spirit is key.
There is something intuitive that can't be voiced, but is felt or known. To explain it would ruin it. There is no need to analyze or to prove it. Each one can have a personal experience of it. It's that feeling you remember from when you were at the beach as a kid, or hiking in a hushed green forest. The smell of the earth, the emotion you felt while going through something big in your life. There is a sense of understanding at a deeper level, a sense of what is truly real. A kind of grace and elegance, an awe at what may be possible. Perhaps gratitude for what you've had in your life.
As I have grown, my focus has shifted from outside of me to within, and the greatest task I have as an artist is to be present. I create with spirit, like great jazz musicians who effortlessly improvise.
What I choose to paint is less important than the energy I have while doing so. As I have come to this realization, my work has become more abstract, more about energy. I now call myself an abstract artist.
I am inspired by artists whose work expresses emotion and energy, light and color. I love the work of Mark Rothko, Gerhard Richter, David Hockney, Jasper Johns.
My Technique: Reverse Painting on Vinyl
My work has certainly been driven by my chosen technique: Reverse Painting on Clear Vinyl. I would not have created the images I have done if I'd been painting on canvas, in the usual way. While still in art school, I discovered and began to develop this technique, which became actual paintings in 1990. Nearly 900 paintings later, I still prefer the challenges and beauty of my method.
Painting with acrylic paints on vinyl allows for a freedom I don't experience on canvas. It is not always possible to see exactly what is happening, because of painting backwards. The results are often magical to me, and great surprises are possible.
